Star Dogs (beta)

(The completed final version is now out! https://lizardmandiaries.blogspot.com/2019/11/star-dogs-players-handbook.html)

Here's a rules light Sci Fi Rulebook (it's a bit like Star Wars Guild Dogs). I'm still working on it, but it's playable and a complete PDF.

Please give me feedback if you have any and let me know if you can do Sci Fi art that might be able to go into it.

    2. Cyber augmentation tables and malfunction tables seem to be missing?
In 'Classes' section there is a part about level up
"If a PC changes class they begin at level 1 for the benefits associated with that class (retaining all benefits from their previous class), but must achieve the amount of Level Up Points required of their overall level to level up." This sentence seems to be too long and I wonder if it can be re-written.

    3. Thanks Kyana!

Re: Augmentation tables. I thought I would leave the decisions as to what players would like augmented as a conversation at the table between referee and player. As to Cosmetic and Major Malfunction tables - they will be in the referee handbook which I am working on at the moment.

I made that long sentence into two, how do you think it looks now?

"If a PC changes class they begin at level 1 in regards to the benefits associated with the new class (retaining all benefits from their previous class). The player must now achieve the amount of Level Up Points required of their overall level to level up."

  2. If Augmentation tables are left for DM and players to decide upon, maybe a short line about this would be appropriate? As of now it isn't obvious and it looks as if a piece of the content is missing.

As for the progression, yes, I think it reads better.

    1. Thanks! Very much appreciate the feedback.

Currently, I have the following line in the book: "To have an augmentation installed, a PC must first find a technician and consult with them as to what work they would like done."

Do you think it should be more explicit than that? And, do you think I should explicitly point out that there is tables for malfunctions in the Referees handbook?

    2. I think more explicit reference would be helpful. I cannot speak for everybody but I was expecting these tables in this book – 'find technician' requirement still doesn't seem to me to be clear enough that this is DM/player negotiation about augmentations.
I'd add something like that, in parenthesis "(what augmentations are available is decided in a conversation at the table between referee and player.)"

    3. Thanks again!

I have added "(the specifics of the augmentation should be determined in conversation between referee and player)." to the "Installing an augmentation" section.

I will let you see the referee's handbook when it is done and get your opinion as to which book the malfunction tables should be in.

    4. Hey Kyana, I've ended up adding the malfunction tables to the player's handbook. Thanks again for the feedback. Final version should be out soon!

  3. Nice clean design and clever use of the inverted photos. I can't say I favor the "space orky" nomenclature for weapons. Maybe add a page of sample combats written like story hooks?

    1. Thanks for the feedback! I kind of intended "Bull" and "Laz" to be more military shorthand than orky but I can see it now..hrmmm.

I've not written sample gameplay before, having it as a story hook is a good idea! Thanks again.

    2. The old scifi terms I see for weapons: Slug, Beam, Energy/Plasma. Throwing in something unusual for flavor is good, given some believable science (like gyrojets, or maser melters).

    4. I like 'Bull' as a name of the weapon, and I think it might go well with 'Slug', kind of like a counterpart to it and/or alternative ballistic weapon.

    5. I'm always quite boring in my naming conventions, I'll have a think about what I've named them to see if I can come up with something a little more catchy.

I wanted to err on the side of clarity. Is it clear that "Bull" = bullets and "Laz" = Lazer?

I do like "Slug" quite a lot.

    6. The other thing was, I was attempting to keep the weapon/armour/equipment super basic in the initial book - just to keep it simple. And then maybe at a later point in time have a more expanded armory added.
